Facial Proportions and Expressions

Week of March 28 - April 1

Project in Process: Expressive Clay Portrait

  • Monday: work on eyes.
  • Tuesday: add a mouth and a nose. sculpt a nose and begin the mouth.
  • Wednesday: add ears. clean up the face.
  • Thursday: add hair and complete the texture in the background. Clay Portrait is due!
  • Friday: Freshman Field Day. All clay projects must be completed prior to Friday since the clay will be dried up over spring break.

  • Page 1: All Unit information and cut-out a 6x6 window
  • Page 2 (back of page 1): all information on face proportions
  • Page 3: 2 6x6 proportional faces with expression.
  • Page 4: your proportional drawing of your neighbor
All Pre-Planning Pages are due at the end of class on FRIDAY, March 25.

PROJECT: Expressive Clay Portraits

  • Monday: Work on Pre-Planning Pages for Expressive Clay Portraits. Collographs studio project and Post-Planning Pages are due!
  • Tuesday: Introduce expressive faces based on face proportions. Work on maquette drawing in journal for clay portrait.
  • Wednesday: Begin clay portrait. 
  • ThursdayWork on clay portrait.
  • Friday: Work on clay portrait.

Upcoming Due Dates:
  1. Studio Project - COLLAGRAPHS - by Monday, March 21you need to complete an EMBOSSMENT (no ink), 1 black ink collagraph print, and 1 MONOPRINT (use watercolor to enhance your prints)

Monday - Tuesday, March 14-15

Prioritize what you need to complete:
  1. Print your COLLAGRAPH.
  2. Complete your POST-PLANNING PAGES.
  3. Use WATERCOLOR to make a MONOPRINT of one of your prints. Use COMPLEMENTARY colors. You can add colored pencil for effect.
  4. ACTIVATE your pages and borders for your Post-Planning Pages.
  5. Work on Unit 1 TEST REVIEW

Week of March 14 - 18

PROJECT: Complete COLLAGRAPHS! and begin Expressive Clay Portraits

  • Monday: Print Collagraphs. Monoprinting will be introduced. Continue working on Post-Planning Pages.
  • Tuesday: Review for Unit 1 test. Discuss upcoming project and expectations while Ms. Munson is away. Work on Post-Planning and Monoprints. LAST DAY TO PRINT YOUR COLLAGRAPH during class
  • Wednesday: Begin Expressive Clay Portraits by learning Face Proportions and making a portrait of the student across from you. 
  • Thursday: Test on Unit 1! Work on portrait of another student.
  • Friday: Work on Pre-Planning Journal Pages for Unit 2: Expressive Clay Portraits

Week of March 7 - 11

PROJECT: COLLAGRAPHS!


  • Monday - Friday: This week we should complete our collagraph plates and make our prints. Once the plate is complete, it needs to be sealed with Mod Podge before it can be printed. You will need to make an embossment (no ink), 3 prints, and turn one of the prints into a monoprint in order to complete your studio project. Once you complete your print, you will make your Post-Planning Pages for your journal.

ESSENTIAL Question: How does an artist show emotions through design?

  • Use your MAQUETTE to decide on your textures from your STUDIO PROJECT COLLAGRAPH PLATE.
  • Fill out your LEGEND for your Maquette.
  • Make a rubbing of your maquette. Shade with a pencil in both directions - DO NOT MOVE YOUR "DESIGN (formerly Intro)" PAPER.
  • OUTLINE your shapes on the rubbing.
  • Use your rubbing as a pattern to begin building your COLLAGRAPH PLATE.
